IMPORTANT NOTICE:

  • Applicants of Visa are strongly advised to read carefully the Visa Guidelines before making an application;
  • Visa applicants are advised to make their applications through the Official Tanzania Immigration website (www.immigration.go.tz) ONLY and Not through any other links;
  • Any applicant of Visa is assumed to have read, understood and agreed to the Terms and Conditions available on the Visa Portal and stipulated in the Disclaimer ;
  • Applicants must ensure that their passports have a validity of at least six months and at least one unused visa page before submitting their application;
  • Applicant is expected to apply for a right category of visa. If the applicant is not sure about the type of visa he/she requires, he/she is advised to seek guidance through the e-mail: info@immigration.go.tz
  • Visitors who wish to come for holiday or Tourism are advised to apply for Ordinary Visa. However, holders of American passports who come for holiday or tourism will have to apply for Multiple Entry Visa;
  • Applicants who are Not Americans, and wish to apply for Multiple Visa are >strongly advised to read carefully and observe the requirements for Multiple Visa,
  • Any Visa wrongly applied or which lacks sufficient attachment(s) may be rejected;
  • No refund will be made in respect of any rejected visa application;
  • The Visa applications will be processed within ten days, therefore applicants are strongly advised to observe the stipulated time frame while making their applications;
  • After making payments, applicants are required to wait for approval of their Visa before they start their journey, even If the stipulated time frame expires;
  • Approval notifications will be sent to applicants’ e-mails If for any reason, the applicant does not receive Visa notification within the specified time, he is advised to access the Visa Grant Notification by checking the Status of their Visa Online;
  • The Tanzania Immigration Services Department may give or withhold reasons for rejection of Visa to the applicant;
  • Applicants whose nationals fall under Referral Visa category are not advised to book flight tickets or make payments for any reservations in Tanzania before they get approval for their Visa. Also, such applicants are advised to apply at least two months before their date of travel;
  • The list of countries which fall under Referred Visa may change at any time; therefore, applicants are advised to review this list on our website from time to time.
  • Visa regulations and conditions may be subject to change at any time without prior notification to the applicants.
     

Note:
It should be noted that the possession of Visa is not a final authority to enter the United Republic of Tanzania. The Immigration Officer at the Entry point may refuse a holder of visa to enter, if he is satisfied that the holder is unable to fulfil Immigration entry requirements or if the presence of such person or visitors in the United Republic of Tanzania would be contrary to the National Interests.

There are six types of visa valid for entry into Tanzania

1. ORDINARY VISA (SINGLE ENTRY VISA)
This visa is granted to foreign national for the purposes of Visit, Tourism, Leisure, Holiday, attending Conference, Humanitarian and charity activities, Family Visit, Health Treatment or any other purpose as may be determined by the issuing authority. Its validity does not exceed 90 days for a single entry.

2. BUSINESS VISA
Business visa may be issued for a period not exceeding 90 days to foreign nationals who wish to enter in the United Republic of Tanzania for one of the following purposes:

  • To conduct special assignments such as fixing/repairing machines or to run short term training, etc.
  • To conduct short time professional roles such as auditing accounts, making feasibility studies, establishing professionals and business contacts, making arrangements for investments during the start-up period etc;
  • To conduct any other short term lawful business-related task recognised by the laws of the country and as may be determined by the issuing authority.


IMPORTANT NOTE FOR BUSINESS VISA:

  • The maximum validity for business Visa is 90 days;
  • Business Visa cannot be extended nor renewed while the holder is in the country;
  • Business Visa is issued on a single entry basis. It cannot be used to re-enter the country after the holder leaves the country;
  • The Business Visa should not be taken as a substitute for Residence Permit. If for any reason, the activity or assignment for which the guest comes will exceed 3 months, then a guest is advised to obtain Residence Permit instead of Business Visa


3. MULTIPLE ENTRY VISA
Multiple Visa may be issued to American nationals (due to bilateral agreements between Tanzania and America) who wish to come for such purposes like Holiday/Tourism, visiting friends and relatives or attending a conference, as they are not entitled for Ordinary Visa. This implies that, USA passport holders who visit Tanzania for tourism or holiday MUST apply for Multiple Visa even If they come for single entry.

For American nationals who wish to come for business purposes, they are advised to read the Business Visa Section above.

Multiple Visa may also be issued to Directors of Companies registered in Tanzania who do not reside in the country, Persons engaged in Bilateral Meetings, Spouses married to Tanzanians/Residents, Government Consultants, Representatives of International NGOs and any other person as may be determined by the Commissioner General of Immigration or Commissioner of Immigration Zanzibar.

However, Non Resident Directors MUST upload proof showing they are Directors of Company registered in Tanzania. The required proof in this regard is a document from BRELA (This is the Competent Authority responsible for registration of companies in Tanzania) and the document name is called BRELA SEARCH. Therefore, the applicant (in this regard Director) should consult his company and obtain this document to be uploaded in his Online Application for multiple Visa.

Applicants who apply for Multiple Visa under the umbrella of projects or bilateral meetings with the Government Ministries or Institutions, should obtain a covering letter from respective Government Ministries or Institutions, and upload such letters in their applications. Failure to observe this procedure may render their applications to be rejected.

Applicants for Multiple Visa under family visit category are required to upload proof of relationships with their family members. In this case, certificate of marriage (for proof of relationship with regards to spouses) or birth certificates (for proof of relationship with regard to children).

This Visa may be issued to foreign nationals whose purposes of visits call for frequent visits to the United Republic of Tanzania. These may include Directors of Companies registered in Tanzania who do not reside in the country, Persons engaged in Bilateral Meetings, Spouses married to Tanzanians/Residents, Government Consultants, Representatives of international NGO’s and any other person as may be determined by the Commissioner General of Immigration or Commissioner of Immigration Zanzibar.

This Visa (Multiple) is also issued to American citizens who wish to come for Holiday or Tourism purposes, as they are not entitled for Ordinary Visa. The maximum validity of this Visa is 12 months. However, the holder of the Multiple Visa cannot stay in the country for twelve (12) consecutive months. They are required to leave the country at most after every three months.

Validity and Stay Duration of Multiple Visa
Multiple Visa may be issued with a validity of maximum 12 months. However, the maximum stay duration is three months. This means, the holder of Multiple Visa cannot stay in the country for twelve (12) consecutive months. Instead, in each visit they may stay in the country for a maximum of three months.

NB:

  • Applicants who are not American citizens and who wish to apply for Multiple Visa MUST ensure they possess and upload justifiable documents for respective category of Multiple visa as listed in the Visa Portal;
  • Applicants whose countries fall under referral Visa are not advised to apply for Multiple Visa;


4. TRANSIT VISA
This Visa may be issued to foreign nationals for the purpose of transiting through to another destination outside the United Republic for a period not exceeding seven days. The applicant of this visa may be required to provide proof of a Visa of the destination country and/or onward ticket.

NB:
Transit Visa is strictly intended for those travellers whose purpose of entry is to pass through Tanzania, and cannot be used for tourism purposes.

5. GRATIS VISA
This visa may be issued to a holder of diplomatic, services or official passport or Travel Document of recognized International Organization who is on official duty and their Dependents. It can be also issued to a holder of ordinary passport or Travel document as it may be directed by the Commissioner General of Immigration and Commissioner of Immigration Zanzibar.

NB:
Applicants of Gratis Visa who wish to submit their applications online must be holders of Diplomatic Passports, and are required to upload invitation letter from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, biographic data page and cover page or any page which shows that the passport attached is diplomatic.

6. STUDENT VISA
Student visa is granted to foreign national who enters the Country for the purpose of Academic conducts such as Research Students, Intern, Volunteering, Exchange students and Prospective Students who have obtained admission in registered Institutions in Tanzania. The validity of this Visa is categorised in two, the first category is for applicants whose academic programs do not exceed 90 days, for which the visa fee is 50 USD. And the second category is for those whose academic programs exceed 90 days, for which the Visa fee is 250 USD.

Applicants whose countries do not require Visa to enter Tanzania, and who wish to come for academic purposes will have to apply for Student Pass.

NB:
The validity of Visa for applicants who come for language courses will not exceed six months.

There are some countries which their nationals cannot obtain Visa on arrival. These countries fall under the so called Referral Visa Category. The list of these countries is available on our website (in the Visa Information Section), and may be reviewed from time to time

PROCEDURE FOR REFERRAL VISA CATEGORY:
Applicants from this category MUST submit their Visa applications Online, and should wait until their applications are approved before starting their journey. These applicants are further advised to submit their applications at least 2 months before their travel date. Having an invitation letter or a request letter for visa from the Host is an added credibility of their application. This letter, if available MUST be uploaded in the Online Visa Application and NOT to be sent by email as a separate document. The letter may be uploaded separately or merged with the Itinerary of the Trip and uploaded in the Return ticket field.

If the Visa is approved, the holder MUST come with the actual return ticket upon arrival. If the Host wishes to write a request letter to support his guest’s application, the letter should be addressed to the Commissioner General of immigration, If the guest will visit mainland Tanzania, or addressed to Commissioner of Immigration, Zanzibar, if the guest will be visiting Zanzibar. If the guest wishes to visit both, then the address of the letter should regard the first destination.

NB:

  • Applicants whose nationals fall under this category are not advised to pay for flight tickets or make payments for any reservations in Tanzania before they get approval for their Visa.
  • Also, applicants under Referral Visa Category are Not advised to apply for Multiple Visa.
    STATELESS AND REFUGEES:
    Stateless persons and Refugees who hold Vienna Convention documents also fall under Referral Visa category, and are required observe the Referral Visa Category procedure indicated above.
     

Can someone else apply for a visa on behalf of another?

Yes, provided that, all the requirements are completed and the application form is duly filled in and properly signed.

Can someone else collect the visa/passport on another’s behalf?

Yes, as long as he/she will bring the collection number and/or letter of authority to pick up with identification card.

On the Visa application form, what is the reference in Tanzania?

Name, address and phone number of your contact person in Tanzania, if you don’t have contact person, the name, address and phone number of hotel/accommodation while in Tanzania.

Can someone get a visa upon arrival?

It is not guaranteed, it is strongly advised to apply for a visa at the High Commision of Tanzania in Malaysia.

When will be the start date of the visa and What are the Maximum days of stay in Tanzania?

All Visas are valid from the date issued. 90 days from the date of entry/arrival.

In Visa application form, what do you mean by saying “Means of Financial Support”?

It means, the sponsor of your trip (company, organization, employer, family or self-support).

Is Yellow fever vaccination (Y.F.V.) necessary?

It is not compulsory, if you are traveling straight to Tanzania from Malaysia or just connecting flights from any airports in the World.(If you are entering Tanzania through other Countries, please refer to the visa section of our website for more information).

Can a Visa allow me to work in Tanzania?

No, a visa grants you permission to land into the country and NOT permission to work.

What is the requirement for a volunteer to undertake his/her duties?

Volunteers must have authorization to volunteer from the Immigration offices in their respective local areas or Immigration Head Office.

Can I get a CTA permit at the boarder?

The permission to undertake temporary assignment/work, for short period less than 90 days or volunteering (CTA) is normally given at the Immigration Local Offices and NOT at the point of entry or border.

Does the Tanzania High Commission issue immunization waiver?

No. However we recommend that you carry your physician’s note for immunization waiver and submit it to the Health Officers at the point of entry.
Standard Practice requires that, all matters relating to immunization, waiver and its control need to be decided upon by the Health Officers at respective entry point or boarder.

Can I apply for a Visa upon arrival?

Yes. Tourists/ Visitors may obtain their visas upon arrival at any entry point in Tanzania, but it is HIGHLY recommended that one secures the visa before traveling to Tanzania.

Custom Clearance & Allowable Duty Free Items

Personal effects including binoculars, cameras, and film for personal use may be brought in free of duty.
A custom's bond may be demanded from those bringing in video/filming equipment, radio, tape recorders and musical instruments. The bond is redeemed in full at the time of re-exporting the goods.
Duty free allowances are 200 Cigarets, 50 Cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco plus one pint of spirit provided the traveller is over 16 years. Importation of firearms without special permission is criminal offence.
At the time of departure, Customs will require to see receipts of items purchased locally for export

Any person born in the United Republic on or after Union day is deemed to be a citizen of the United Republic if at the time of his birth one of his parents is or was a citizen of United Republic of Tanzania.

Any person born outside the United Republic on or after Union day is deemed to be a citizen of the United Republic by descent if one of his parents is a citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania by birth or naturalization.

Any person who is not a citizen of Tanzania whether by birth or by descent may apply for Tanzania citizenship by naturalization to the Minister responsible for citizenship matters.

CONDITIONS FOR CITIZENSHIP BY NATURALIZATION
Qualifications for a foreigner who applies for Tanzania Citizenship are:

  • that he has resided in the United Republic throughout the period of twelve months immediately preceding the date of application,
  • that during the ten years immediately preceding the said period of twelve months he resided in the United Republic for periods amounting in the aggregate do not less than seven years,
  •  that he has an adequate knowledge of Kiswahili or the English language, 
  • that he is of good character,
  • that, in terms of his past and potential contribution to the national economy, or scientific and technological advancement and to the national social and cultural welfare, he would be a suitable citizen of the United Republic,
  • that he intends, if naturalized  to continue to reside permanently in the United Republic.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Application for Tanzania citizenship undergo the following procedures:-

  • an applicant fills in prescribed Forms.
  • the applicant submits the application to the Ward Executive Secretary or Sheha (for the case of Zanzibar) where the applicant resides.
  • the Ward Executive Secretary or Sheha submits the application to the District Immigration Office and the applicant pays a submission fee of USD $1500 which is non refundable.
  • the applicant publishes in two consecutive issues of the daily news papers registered in Tanzania Main land and Zanzibar a notice of intention to apply for naturalization.
  • the applicant has to be interviewed by the District Defense and Security Committee.
  • the District Immigration Officer forward the application to the Regional Immigration Officer who forwards the said application to the Regional Defense and Security Committee for further scrutiny.
  • the Regional Immigration Officer forwards the application to the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services for his recommendation to the Minister.
  • For the case of Zanzibar before the application is sent to the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services, the Commissioner of Immigration Services Zanzibar forwards the application to the office of the Second Vice President for recommendation and it is later submitted to  the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services for his recommendation to the Minister.
  • the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services forwards the recommended application to the Minister  for final decision.

3.1 Naturalization of Women Married to Citizens

A woman married to a citizen of the United Republic shall at any time during the life time of the husband be entitled upon making an application in a prescribed form, to be naturalized as a citizen of the United Republic.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE FOR A MARRIED WOMAN:

  • the Applicant fills in prescribed Forms.
  • the Applicant may submit the application to the District, Regional immigration office or at the Headquarters and pays a submission fee of USD 1500 which is non refundable.
  • the Applicant publishes in two consecutive issues of the daily news papers registered in Tanzania Main land and Zanzibar a notice of intention to apply for naturalization.
  • the District or Regional Immigration Officer forwards the application to the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services for his recommendations.
  • The Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services forwards the application to the Minister for final decision.

REQUIREMENTS:
The application  for Tanzania citizenship by a married woman should be attached with:

  • Proof of husband's citizenship.
  • Marriage certificate registered in Tanzania.
  • A copy of  valid national passport
  • A proof of valid immigration status.
  • Five recent passport size photographs.

3.2 Naturalization of Minor
The minister may cause the Minor child of any citizen of the United Republic to be naturalized as a citizen of the United Republic upon application made in the prescribed manner by a parent or guardian of a child.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES FOR A MINOR:

  • the Parent or guardian fills in prescribed Forms.
  • the Parent or guardian may submit the application to the District, Regional immigration office or at the Headquarters.
  • the District or Regional Immigration Officer forwards the application to the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services for recommendations.
  • the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services forwards the application to the Minister for final decision.

NOTE: A Parent or guardian must be a citizen and he has to proof that he is a citizen of the United Republic.

REQUIREMENTS:
The application  for Tanzania citizenship for a minor should be attached with:

  • Proof of citizenship of parent or guardian
  • Birth certificate of a child
  • A valid Immigration status
  • Five recent  passport size photographs
  • the parent or guardian pays a submission fee of USD $1500 which is non refundable.

The procedures for renunciation of Tanzania citizenship:

  1. Applicant Fills in prescribed forms.
  2. Submission of the application forms to the Immigration Office, Embassies/High commission where an applicant resides,
  3. Submission of the application forms to the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services.
  4. The Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services forward the application to the Minister who registers the declaration made by applicant.

REQUIREMENTS
The application for renunciation of Tanzania citizenship should be attached with:

  1. Approval of the grant of citizenship from the other Country.
  2. Return of Tanzania passport.
  3. Five recent  passport size photographs.
  4. Payment of renunciation fees of USD $60.

The Minister may by order deprive the citizenship of any citizen of the United Republic who is a citizen by naturalization if he is satisfied that the certificate of naturalization was obtained by means of fraud, false representation, or concealment of any material facts or else as provided under Tanzania Citizenship Act of 1995 and its Regulation of 1997.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Students who wish to visit the United Republic of Tanzania for various academic purposes for a period not exceeding three months may be issued a student Visa for a fee of 50 USD. Whereas those who come for the same purpose for a period exceeding 3 months will pay 250 USD, 300 USD and 550 USD depending on the category chosen and will be issued with a Student Visa for a period not exceeding 2 years.

NB:
Applicants for Students Visa exceeding 3 months should be of the age from 18 years and above. If the applicant is below 18 years, then his parent or guardian must either be a Tanzanian citizen or hold a Residence Permit.


VISA PAYMENT METHOD:
An Applicant can make payment of visa fee online through one of the following methods:

  • By Visa card or By Master card;
  • By Swift transfer (i.e. depositing money directly into bank account at the bank counter).

After making fee payment, an Applicant will receive a notification that his payment has been received. He/she will wait for Approval of Visa before starting the journey.


HOW TO APPLY FOR A VISA ONLINE:
• Visit the Immigration Services Website (www.immigration.go.tz)
• Click “e-services” button;
• Select and click “e-Visa Application Form”;
• Upload and attach the applicant’s scanned relevant documents for the Visa;
• Then, the applicant will receive an e-mail message containing User Identification Number (that may be used to track the application online);
• After completion of filling an online visa application form, the applicant will have to pay for a for respective visa fee;
• Upon successful payment, the applicant will submit his application;
• Lastly, the applicant will receive a message of confirmation of his application being received.


HOW TO TRACK VISA APPLICATION STATUS:
After successfully submitting the application, an applicant may track the progress of his application by using his ID Number, which is given during the application stage. To track the application, applicant will go back to the Visa Application System, then click the Visa Status button.

ORDINARY (SINGLE ENTRY) VISA
An application of Ordinary Visa should be accompanied with the following;

Copy of the applicant’s valid passport (biographic data page);
Return ticket of the flight;
Dully filled in declaration form
50 USD visa fee.


MULTIPLE VISA (DIRECTOR)
A recent passport size photo of the applicant;

Visa Application for Referral Cases
Applicants who fall under Referral Visa category MUST apply their Visa Online; they cannot obtain Visa on arrival. Their Visa process may take longer time than other Visa applicants. They are advised to submit their applications at least two months in advance before their travel date.

Further, they are advised to attach an introduction letter and any other document of their host (whether an individual or company) while applying If applicable. If they come for tourism purpose, it is recommended to obtain a covering letter from a registered credible company and it must be uploaded online along with other

relevant documents for consideration. The introduction/covering letter may be attached in any attachment field along with other documents as a single PDF file,

After submission of application, applicants are advised not to start their journey until they get confirmation that their Visa are approved. They are further advised not to make payments for any booking or reservations made

i. All visitors wishing to come for tourist purposes are required to apply for ordinary visa EXCEPT American nationals (USA Passport holders) who are required to apply for Multiple Visa;
ii. If an applicant wishes to visit both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, he/she is advised to select his first destination while filling the form
iii. The nearby Embassy is regarded as the Embassy closest to where the applicant is while applying for Visa, and If required, the applicant may be called to appear physically to that Embassy for interview;
iv. Every Passport holder is required to have his/her own Visa application submitted.in this case, even minors who are filled in their parents’ Visa applications must have their own separate Visa applications submitted;
v. Once Visa application is submitted, no further changes may be done and effected to such applications. If for any reasons there will be some mismatch in information on the issued visa or flight changes which affects the arrival or departure date, the applicant will communicate this to the relevant immigration authority for guidance or assistance;
vi. Business Visa is not a substitute for Residence Permit. As such, it cannot be extended nor renewed while the holder is still in the country;
vii. Applicants of Multiple Visa who are not USA national are strongly advised to read carefully and observe requirements for each category of Multiple Visa as stipulated in the Visa Guidelines. Any application lacking required attachment(s) will be disqualified.
viii. Multiple Visa is not supposed to be used as a Residence Permit. The holder can stay at a maximum for 3 months in each visit. This does not mean that, a holder should be staying for 3 months, leave for a while and come back for another 3 months.
ix. Transit Visa is strictly for applicants who wish to pass through the United Republic of Tanzania to other countries and MUST be supported by onward ticket and Visa (If applicable) to such other country. Visiting Tanzania for tourism for few days does not warrant applicant to apply for Transit Visa.
x. All applicants (travellers) MUST show their return ticket upon arrival.
xi. Applicants whose countries fall under Referral Visa are advised to observe the Visa Procedure for Referral visa Category;

The information below is provided to assist Tanzanian Nationals traveling or living Abroad and to inform them of measures to take in case of any eventuality.

CONSULAR INFORMATION FOR TANZANIAN NATIONALS

1. Passports

All Tanzanian Nationals require a valid passport for travel outside the country. It is advisable that the passport be valid for at least six (6) months after the intended date of return.

It should be noted that Passports are not issued at Tanzanian Missions but rather at the Immigration Department, Dar es Salaam.

2. Procedures for Application and Issuance of New Passports.

Application for a new passport is lodged by the applicant at the Immigration Headquarters, Zanzibar and or any Regional or District Immigration Office where the applicant resides.

3. Documents to be Submitted to Support Application for a New Passport

Any application for a passport shall be accompanied by:

  • A birth certificate or an affidavit of birth or certificate of naturalization of the applicant.
  • A birth certificate or an affidavit of birth or certificate of naturalization of the applicant’s parent or parents.
  • Recent, clear and
  • Un-mounted passport size photographs as may be directed by the issuing authority.
  • In case of the applicant who is below the age of 16 years, the parent’s or legal guardian’s written consent.

4. Persons Entitled to Passport or Travel Documents

  • An ordinary passport may be issued to any citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania for a purpose of traveling to outside the country
  • A service passport may be issued to any citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania who is in the public service or is holding office as respectively specified
  • A Diplomatic passport may be issued to a citizen of the United Republic specified in the third schedule
  • An East African Passport may be issued to a citizen of the United Republic who intends to travel within the East African Community member states.
  • A certificate of Identity may be issued to a person other than a citizen of the united Republic of Tanzania who cannot obtain a passport from the country of which he is a citizen or does not have citizenship of an y country for the purpose of traveling out side The United Republic of Tanzania.

5. Visa Requirements

Tanzanian Nationals may require entry visa to entry some countries. Click here to see visa requirements.

Some countries may require International Health Certificates of Vaccination against certain diseases like yellow fever, especially if the country one is traveling from is within the yellow fever zone. Please check with your health

6. Issuance of an Emergency Traveling Document (ETD)

An Emergency Travel Document may be issued to a citizen of the United Republic who is traveling on an Emergency journey and does not fulfill the normal requirements of getting a passport. A person who is stranded abroad and cannot get a passport or is being deported back home. Such document are issued at Tanzania Missions

7. Lost or Stolen Passport/Travel Document

In case of loss of passport/travel document, please contact the Tanzania Embassy / High Commission. A police report of the stolen passport should be submitted at the Mission for further processes.

8. Registration of Tanzanian Nationals

9. Emergency

  • In the event of death of Tanzanian National abroad, the next of kin should inform the nearest Tanzania Mission.

10. Birth Certificates

  • Birth certificates are only issued by Registrar of Insolvency Trustee Agency (RITA).
  • Tanzanians living abroad may contact the Tanzania Embassy / High Commission for assistance.

11. Application for Replacement of Passport.

Where a holder’s passport is lost, stolen or severely damaged an application for replacement shall be accompanied by sworn declaration of the circumstances surrounding the loss, theft or damage of the passport and authority to which the loss, theft or damage was reported.

12. Revocation of Passports and Travel Documents

The Commissioner of Immigration Services at any time can revoke the passport or travel documents granted or issued to the holder if:-

  • The holder of a passport permits another person to use his/her passport.
  • The holder of a passport has been deported or repatriated to the United Republic of Tanzania at the expense of the Government.
  • The holder has ceased to be a citizen of United Republic of Tanzania.
  • The holder engages in illicit drug trafficking, money laundering, migrant trafficking, terrorist act or any other illegal transaction. It is in national interest or national security.

13. Legalisation of Documents

Ministry fo Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Legal Unit and Department and Tanzanian Missions can assist in legalizing the following documents

  • Birth Certificates
  • Death Certificates
  • Educational Documents

14. Shipping Deceased

The following are requirements for permission to ship the Human remains to Tanzania

  1. One certified copy of Death Certificate
  2. Burial Transit Permit
  3. Letter of non-contagious disease from local health department
  4. Notarized embalment letter/Certificate of embalment
  5. Deceased passport
  6. Two passport size photographs if deceased’s passport not available
  7. The letter from the Funeral Director

All documents should be sent to the Tanzania High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for authentication and issuance of embassy Permit to ship the deceased to Tanzania.

If ALL documents are correct and accepted the permission to ship the deceased body to Tanzania will be issued immediately.

Procedures for Issuance of residence and work permit class "A" and "B". All foreigners intending to reside in the United Republic of Tanzania for investment, business or work or any other acceptable purpose are issued with residence permits.

1. Types of Residence Permits
There are three types of Residence Permits:

  • Class A: Issued to employed foreigners
  • Class B: Issued to foreigners employed by companies or institutions
  • Class C: Issued to other foreigners such as missionaries, students, volunteers, researchers or retired persons.

The authority to issue Residence Permits is vested to the Director of Immigration Services. Applicants who are not satisfied with the Director’s decision may appeal to the Minister of Home Affairs while they are outside the Country. Applications for Residence Permit Class B and C should be submitted while applicants are outside the country.

2. Requirements for obtaining Residence Permit Class A

  • Residence Permit Class A may be issued to foreigners intending to invest in prospective areas such as: Industry, Mining, Forest, Social services and business.

Documents required for the first grant application :
2.1.1 Tanzania Mainland procedures

  • TIF 1 forms in duplicate duly filled
  • A covering letter from the applicant
  • Six photographs
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Education certificates (if appropriate)
  • Business license
  • Certificate of registration for Tax payers Identification Number (TIN)
  • Certificate of registration for Value Added Tax (VAT)
  • Copy of registration
  • Memorandum and articles of association for company by liability
  • Extract from the registrar-for business names
  • Evidence of business premises
  • Sectoral approval from any relevant Ministry (if needed)
  • Share certificate (if needed) or share transfer and board resolution (for investors who have bought some shares or company.
  • Power of attorney for a person given power as a Director
  • Copy of passport pages authentificating nationality and validity of passport.
  • Business licence tax clearance certificate
  • Evidence of the capital that has been invested in the company in terms of cash and assets. i.e.
  • Bank statement/financial statement

2.1.2 Documents required during application for renewal

  • As listed in No.1 to 8 above
  • C-9 or forms of annual returns of company having a share capital
  • Certificate of incorporation/registration
  • A copy of issued permit
  • Original permit

NB: Those who do not qualify under the T.I.C. should provide a Bank proof of or assets valued to USD $300,000 to be considered for the Class A permit by the Director of Immigration Services.

2.2 Applicants who would like the names of their dependant wife and children to be endorsed in their permits must produce a proof of relationship preferably marriage certificate and birth certificates for their children.

2.3 There is a fee of US $1600 for a Class A permit, which is generally valid for two years. Permits can be replacement for an additional two years for US $1600.

2.4 US $20 has to be paid for all types of permits as a fee for Re-entry Pass in respect of each permit holder and his/her dependant(s) endorsed in each permit.

Requirements for obtaining Residence Permit Class ‘B’

Residence permit Class B is issued to foreign expatriates with rare profession to obtain in the country to work for the companies in the country.

Documents required for the first grant application

  • TIF 1 forms duly filled
  • Covering letter
  • Certificate of incorporation
  • Business license
  • Tax Clearance Certificate
  • Tax Payer Identification Number Certificate (TIN)
  • Photostat copy of the applicant’s passport
  • Employment contract, signed by the employer and the employee. It should also include a clause on repatriation of an employee to his/her place of domicile or engagement in case of termination of contract for lawful cause.
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) of the applicant
  • Five passport size photographs
  • Organization’s chart
  • Memorandum and articles of Association
  • Translations (by authorised institutions) of documents/certificate in case they are written in languages other than English or Kiswahili.
  • Registration certificate from professional institution/Boards for posts of Accountants, Engineers,
  • Surveyors, Doctors, Nurses, pilots, teachers, and other posts of the like.
  • In case the applicant is currently employed in Tanzania and gets employed to another company, a letter of no objection, original permit from previous employer and current immigration status of the applicant is needed.

Fees for Residence Permit Class ‘B’-1st application:

  • Residence Permit – US $600
  • Re-entry Pass - US $20
  • Replacement US $600
  • Dependents (especially wife and children under 18 years) should pay Re-entry pass US $20 each, if they have to be included in the permit.
  • If dependants are children under 18 years and intend to attend schools or colleges in Tanzania, they should apply for Class ‘C’ Permit special for students.

N.B: It is not allowed for the expatriate to be in the country when Residence Permit Class B is being applied for hi/her, until the same is granted. However, if an expatriate changes employer and he/she is still in the country, a special pass will be issued pursuant to section 12 of the Immigration Regulations 1997. The Special Pass costs.

Foreign Investors are required to apply for a Class A Permit while expatriate staff applies for a class B Permit.

Class C Permits are for other categories of residents such as students, researchers, volunteers and missionaries.

Quantity Control Measures  

  • A special import permit issued by the Director of Agriculture and Food Security in Tanzania, is required for the entry of fresh fruit, plants, plant parts, and seeds.
  • An import permit issued by the National Food Commission is required for the entry of meat and edible meat offal, edible vegetable, roots and tubes, and edible fruits and nuts.
  • A permit from the Ministry of Water and Livestock Development, Veterinary Services is required for the importation of live horses, dogs, cats, swine, sheep and goats.
  • A permit issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is required for imports of live trees and other plants, bulbs, roots and the like, cut flowers and ornamental foliage; plants and parts (i.e. seeds and fruits fresh or dried, crushed, powdered); vegetable plaiting materials; raw vegetable materials.

Prohibitions 

  • Prohibition is set on imports of food containing cyclamates or any cyclamate salts for use in food products. 

Technical Measures 

  • Imports of spirits other than gin, geneva, hollands, schnapps, or liqueurs for human consumption, must give satisfactory proof that the spirits to be imported have been matured by storage in wood for a period of not less than three years.  In the same context, medicines and foodstuffs must have a minimum remaining shelf life of six months at the time of importation.  However Brandy under certain conditions, is exempt from this regulation.
  • A sanitary certificate from a qualified veterinary surgeon in the country of export, must accompany every imported animal. 
  • The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Tanzania is responsible for the certification of all plants and plant products (propagative matter, seed, seedlings).  Imported plants are subject to a sanitary certificate signed by an appropriate government official in the country of origin of the goods.
  • Specific labelling requirements are set on imported canned condensed milk for human consumption, vegetable and butter ghee, paints and varnishes.
  • Under the Animal Ordinance Cap. 156, the Ministry of Water and Livestock Development’s Zoo-Sanitary Inspector is responsible for inspection procedures relating to health and sanitary regulations.  Imported animals are subject to quarantine regulations, and to examination by a veterinarian at the port of entry.
  • The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is responsible for the inspection of imported plants.  The importation of fresh fruit, plants, plant parts, and seeds are subject to quarantine regulations and may enter only at designated ports, where they will be subject to examination.

Special Customs Formalities 

  • Imported animals may enter only at designated ports.
  • Imports of the following plants should be made through designated port of entry: coffee except roasted beans, cotton, tobacco, cacao, coconuts, groundnuts, lucerne and clover, rubber, maize, wheat, cloves, peach, barberry, buckthorn, and potatoes.

Procedure for Bringing Pets to Tanzania

  • It is possible to import dogs and cats, but health and vaccination certificates are required.  Dogs and cats should be vaccinated for rabies at least 1 month and not more than 3 years prior to their entry into Tanzania.
  • An import permit should be obtained by sending a letter of request to the Director of Veterinary Services in Tanzania, Ministry of Water and Livestock Development (see address above). In this letter the applicant should state, Type/Breed of pet, age, port of entry in Tanzania and attach vaccination certificates.

The following vaccinations are recommended:  

  • DHLP: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis and Parvo.
  • Puppies should be vaccinated when they are five to seven weeks old with repeat vaccinations two weeks and six weeks later.  The rabies vaccination should be administered with the third vaccination. 

Vaccination for worms  

  • Vaccination for worms should be done every three months or the pets may be given worm tablets every 45 days.

Note

  • If applicant has hosts in Tanzania, it is helpful if they make a follow up of the application and collect the permit on behalf
  • Imported animals are subject to examination by a veterinarian at the port of entry and subject to quarantine if need be.  
  • If you want to take your pet back with you obtain an export permit.
  • The above permit applications is separate from entry visa which should be made to the nearest Consulate / High Commission. Resident and Work Permit application should be made to the immigration department in Tanzania before entry to Tanzania

  1. Get your local police to fingerprint you and send your fingerprints to the following address:-
  2. Attach a letter requesting a “Certificate of Good Conduct” from the applicant or institution requesting the certificate. The letter should provide details of the place you last resided while in Tanzania showing name of district, name of town, street name (if available) and house number.
  3. The letter and attachments must be sent by DHL, having paid all shipment and return charges or Send by any convenient means, indicating the email address at which the applicant will be notified of the successful issuing of the certificate and communicate on means by which it will be returned to him/her at his/her cost.
  4. Attach a copy of your passport, a photocopy of the page containing personal particulars.
  5. Attach two recent passport size pictures
  6. Attach proof of 25 USD payment (plus overseas charges & Bank clearance charges). This a fee charged by NBC Tanzania, therefore you will be responsible for the overseas & other bank charges.

Please Note: Don’t forget to send your recent contact details. If you are required to have the police certificate authenticated you should send it with prepaid postage or bring it personally to the High Commission / Embassy. The Embassy will in turn seek a formal verification from concerned authorities in Tanzania. It may take 2 to 3 working days or even a week, depending on the response from the authorities in Tanzania. If you are intending to get married in Tanzania, a certificate of no impediment from your home country is required

Documents Required

  • you were never married before
  • you are divorced and attach the relevant divorce certificate or
  • you were widowed and produce/attach the relevant document.

This certificate proves that no legal impediment to the intended marriage is known to the responsible authority in your country. Other useful documents to have are Birth certificate, or personal information from registrar of population in your country. If you intend to be married in church a letter from your Pastor/Priest will be helpful.
 
"NOTICE OF MARRIAGE" AND APPLICATION FOR “SPECIAL MARRIAGES LICENSE”
If you have less than 21 days required to put "a notice of intention to marry", you need to make an application for “Special Marriages Licence” from the Registrar of Marriages An application form for “Special Marriages Licence” will be issued and dully filled and a copy of the certificate of no impediment attached to it. The form must be signed and legalised by a lawyer or an advocate. The form must then go back the Registrar of Marriages where it will be checked, a fee will be paid and the "Special Marriage License" will be issued.

With this license the couple must report to the District Commissioner’s office, Church or Mosque (depending on the place where the marriage will take place and the person who will solemnise the marriage) to set the date of the marriage. Two witnesses selected by the couple (resident or non-resident) will have to accompany the couple on the marriage date. After the ceremony, a Tanzanian Marriage Certificate (in duplicate) will be issued.

ABIDING TO THE RULES OF YOUR COUNTRY:  
If an International Certificate of Marriage is required on your return to your country, the Tanzanian marriage certificate must then be brought back to the Registrar of Marriages (Arusha Office) for registration by filling in form No. RGM 111 (Application for registration for a foreign marriage). A fee of approximately TZS 22,000 is paid to obtain a copy of the entry in the Register of Foreign Marriages. An additional TZS 7,000 is required for the International Marriage Certificate to be issued before leaving Tanzania. This International Marriage Certificate must be certified by the Tanzanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Legal Department before being presented to your Embassy for legalisation.

The legalised document can then be recorded with your Municipality/Commune/Civil Record Office. Please contact your Embassy in Tanzania for any further information on this.

Marriage Certificates of Zanzibar must be certified by the Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ad East African Cooperation in Dar es Salaam and other procedures given above.

GETTING MARRIED ABROAD (NDOA)
When a citizen of The United Republic of Tanzania desires to contract a marriage with a citizen of another country, a certificate of no impediment is needed if the law of that country requires him/her to produce one. This certificate is proof that no legal impediment to the intended marriage is known to the responsible authority in Tanzania (Registrar - General of Marriages).

The Embassy does not issue such certificates but is mandated to endorse and forward forms for application of certificates for no impediment (RGM. 12 ) directly to;
